Hosted by the Retailers Association of India (RAI), the Fifth Hyderabad Retail Summit signaled a decisive shift in the industry's trajectory, moving beyond traditional brick-and-mortar models toward a data-centric, omnichannel ecosystem. With the Indian retail market projected to reach $2 trillion by 2032, discussions focused on the ‘Phygital’ evolution, where offline stores function as experience centers integrated with sophisticated digital backends. Retail leaders emphasized, the modern consumer journey now involves at least five touchpoints before a purchase, making seamless channel integration a commercial necessity rather than a luxury.
Tech-infused apparel and consumer shifts
The fashion and apparel sector is spearheading this transformation by deploying artificial intelligence to mitigate the industry’s perennial challenge: inventory distortion. Industry data suggests, AI-driven demand forecasting can reduce stock-outs and overstock by up to 20 per cent. During the summit, executives noted, Hyderabad has emerged as a high-growth corridor for premium retail, with luxury floor space absorption in the city increasing by 15 per cent Y-o-Y.
This growth is driven by a demographic shift toward ‘premiumization,’ where shoppers prioritize brand heritage and technical fabric innovations over fast-fashion cycles.
Operational resilience and market dynamics
The path to expansion is not without hurdles, as rising commercial real estate costs and talent acquisition remain significant headwinds. However, the opportunity lies in hyper-localization. A case study presented at the summit highlighted a regional apparel brand that achieved a 30 per cent spike in conversion by tailoring store assortments to specific neighborhood micro-trends using local data analytics. Bijou Kurien, Chairman, RAI, remarked, the next decade of retail growth will be defined by those who successfully marry technological agility with an unwavering focus on the human experience.
