On the sidelines of the National Garment Fair, The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Dubai Global Connect (DGC), Dubai, and The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI).

The MoU with DGC will provide the association’s members with special member benefits, including discounts and other incentives, and ultimately benefit from DGC’s unique showroom ecosystem.

It also allows DGC to engage with CMAI’s 20,000+ membership base for knowledge sharing, information exchange, and host and attend special events, the CMAI said in a media release.

The MoU with SGCCI will help strengthen the booming textile market in Surat and in its activities in the apparel sector.

CMAI which is shortly opening a regional office in Surat will be undertaking various activities towards the development of garmenting activities in Surat. SGCCI will be extending its full support to CMAI towards these activities. CMAI will also be undertaking to promote all the activities of SGCCI across its various regional offices and members.

E-commerce roll-up firm Mensa Brands plans to expand into a $300-million business in the next five years.

On June 23, this year, the company acquired four direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands — Karagiri, Anubhutee, Ishin, and Priyaasi — in the category in the last one year.

These brands contribute about 20 percent of Mensa Brands’ run rate currently.

Of late, several retailers, even in the offline segment, have made a beeline for the ethnic wear segment. Reliance Retail, last year, announced the launch of its ethnic wear brand Avantra.

The company will be launching a chain of stores under the brand, the first of which will soon come up in Bengaluru. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail has acquired a majority stake in designer label Sabyasachi and a 33 percent stake in another designer label TarunTahiliani.

According to market estimates, the market for ethnic, men’s, and women’s wear are valued at about Rs 1.5-lakh-crore. Experts say that about 88 percent of the ethnic wear market is unorganized in India.

The organized market, hence, is valued at Rs 17,000-18,000 crore. In the organized segment, about 40 percent of the market belongs to brands in the value segment, 30 percent is commanded by premium brands, and 30 percent by luxury brands.

Apparel business Sai Silks (Kalamandir) plans to soon launch an initial public offer worth Rs 1,000 crore-Rs 1,200 crores.

The funds will be raised through a share sale model under the leadership of Motilal Oswal Financial, Edelweiss, and HDFC Bank. Proceedings from the IPO will be used by the Hyderabad-based apparel business to expand its operations.

Currently having 45 brick and mortar stores in South India, Sai Silks (Kalamandir)’s flagship brand is Kalamandir and has retail outlets in states including Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

Specializing in women’s ethnic wear, which contributes around 80 percent of its total sales, the business had earlier planned to launch an IPO in 2013 but deferred the plan.

Its business in the second half of the 2022 financial year is expected to grow steadily thanks to consumers’ festive spending, says CARE Ratings. In 2020 fiscal, Sai Silks’ operating revenues surged by 13 percent to total Rs 1,177 crore before dropping to Rs 679 crore in the pandemic-stricken 2021 financial year.

As per a Fashion Network report, the bright, spacious retail outlet houses a wide selection of Biba’swomenswear and girl’s clothing and accessories.

The store has white walls with red and gold accents and graphic line drawings adorn the walls. Biba’s latest line of kurtas made from Liva fluid fabric features in the store along with its new workwear collection which mixes traditional ethnic silhouettes with western office wear staples.

Biba joins a number of fashion and accessories brands in the new mall including Much More, Aarke, Aurelia, Allen Solly, Kazo, Libas, Lakshita, and Label Ritu Kumar, etc

Lulu Group opened its latest mall in Lucknow earlier this month. The mall measures 2.2 million square feet and was constructed at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore. The retail space will provide employment to at least 15,000 people in Uttar Pradesh, according to Lulu Group.
