Apparel sector targets US$146 billion milestone as rural consumption rises

The domestic Indian apparel and textile manufacturing sector is entering an accelerated expansion phase, underpinned by deep-pocketed consumer demand originating far beyond metropolitan city limits. According to comprehensive market intelligence released by the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India  (CMAI) in partnership with 1Lattice, the country's apparel valuation is on track to rise from US$95.7 billion to US$146.3 billion by 2029, registering a steady 9 per cent CAGR. Industry analysts indicate, this upward trajectory highlights a structural shift away from urban-centric retail models. Rural consumption bases and Tier-III urban clusters now generate the lion's share of total retail volume, forcing textile mills and apparel brands to overhaul distribution architectures, implement value-driven pricing structures, and curate localized merchandise tailored to regional preferences.

Casualization and category shifts shape production

Shifting lifestyle preferences and rising workforce participation are simultaneously driving rapid product diversification across key demographic segments. Casualwear has established itself as the leading apparel category, capturing 31 per cent of total market consumption, closely followed by traditional ethnicwear and formal apparel. While menswear maintains the largest absolute market segment at US$38.5 billion, emerging categories such as kidswear and womenswear are projected to outpace legacy segments through aggressive growth rates of 9.4 per cent and 8.9 per cent CAGR respectively. Industry executives note, traditional brick-and-mortar storefronts continue to dominate retail distribution, commanding roughly 83 per cent of total sales value. Consequently, fashion enterprises are heavily investing in omnichannel fulfillment frameworks to effectively capture expanding consumer segments across diverse geographical tiers without sacrificing operating margins.

Championing domestic policy formulation

Established over six decades ago, the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India represents more than 7,000 corporate members and serves a vast network exceeding 50,000 retailers. The organization champions domestic policy formulation, sustainability integration, and international trade representation for the nation's textile and apparel supply chain.
