Value-commerce market experiences margin reset as Meesho narrows quarterly loss

India’s value-commerce market is experiencing a margin reset as e-commerce platform Meesho narrowed its quarterly net loss by 68 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 132 crore. Driven by a rise in demand across Tier-II and Tier-III fashion and lifestyle categories, the company’s operating revenue increased by 34 per cent to Rs 4,131.6 crore. Their higher order volumes, rising by 17 per cent to 819 million - and optimized fulfillment logistics pushed contribution margins to 6 per cent of net merchandise value.

Branded portfolios accelerate premiumization

While unbranded apparel remains the volume baseline, growth is shifting toward structured value segments. Gross sales for the company's branded marketplace, Meesho Mall, increased by 81 per cent Y-o-Y, signaling that price-conscious consumers are actively trading up to accessible retail labels. Concurrently, creator-led content commerce transactions increased by 160 per cent, proving the effectiveness of social-first discovery for apparel merchandising.

Scale advantages are directly strengthening our marketplace economics, notes Vidit Aatrey, CEO, highlighting logistics operational efficiencies and ad monetisation were key growth drivers.

Industry retail analysts observe,zero-commission seller models are successfully capturing long-tail regional apparel manufacturers. However, customer acquisition expenses ahead of festive shopping cycles present near-term margin pressure across the value-fashion sector.

Maintaining a strong cash position

Meesho operates an asset-light e-commerce marketplace specializing in affordable apparel, home goods, and beauty products. Focused primarily on non-metro Indian markets, the platform generates revenue through seller advertising and logistics fulfillment fees rather than commissions. Expanding via creator commerce and branded storefronts, the public retail venture maintains a strong cash position exceeding Rs 7,000 crore, building upon its origin as a 2015 social-reselling startup.
